What Are Implant Dentures?
An implant denture is a lifelike restorative device designed to replace a complete arch of missing teeth, and it is held in place with several dental implants surgically inserted into the jawbone through the gumline. Securing dentures in this manner ensures that they do not slip out of space when the patient eats or speaks, which can help them chew thoroughly and communicate confidently. Implant dentures can also last much longer than traditional restorations if they receive excellent care, and they are so comfortable that many patients sometimes forget that they have had teeth replaced at all. After a brief oral examination at our office in Springfield or Neptune, Dr. Alkamary may recommend:
Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures
A fixed implant denture is designed to remain securely in position within the patient’s mouth, so it should only be removable with the help of a qualified dentist like Dr. Alkamary. One of these devices is usually held in place with four to six strategically placed implants, and placing it will require the patient to have sufficiently sturdy jawbone structure.
Removable Implant Dentures
A removable implant denture is help in place with two to five implants and designed to be removable by the patient for hygiene purposes. These devices will need to be removed for cleaning every day, and they can often be placed if the patient has low jawbone density.
The Implant Denture Process
The team at the Glamorous Smile Dental Spa is trained and equipped to place dental implants in-house. The process includes the following four steps:
- Consultation: Alkamary will evaluate your oral health and medical history to determine the best way to replace your lost teeth. If she recommends implant dentures, she will schedule you for oral surgery.
- Surgery: The dental implant placement procedure takes about an hour and is rendered completely painless with anesthetics. After being placed, your implants will need to heal for several months before abutments can be placed.
- Abutments: After the implants are sufficiently healed, we’ll fit them with small abutment pieces designed to attach a lifelike dental restoration to them.
- Restoration: Your final restoration will be ready about two weeks after you receive your abutments. After we fix it in place and make any final adjustments, you’ll be ready to begin showing off your new smile.
Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?
Most adults who are in good oral health can be excellent candidates for implant dentures. While oral infections like gum disease will disqualify you from the treatment, we can usually address these issues with appropriate restorative treatments in our office. You’ll also need sufficiently strong jawbones to support dental implants, and we may be able to refer you to a specialist for bone grafts if necessary. When you are ready for implants, we’ll be happy to schedule you for surgery.
