How Dental Insurance Works
Most dental insurance companies build their policies to encourage patients to pursue preventive care. This is why you’ll find that most plans offer 80-100% coverage for regular dental exams and cleanings. These services are designed to minimize cavities, decay, gum disease, and other problems that require more advanced care to treat.
Preventive and restorative dental services are the two umbrella categories typically covered by dental insurance. Cosmetic dentistry is viewed as a luxury and not medically necessary, while orthodontics often requires a supplemental plan to receive coverage.
What is the Difference Between Dental and Medical Insurance?
Although the two might seem as if they are the same, they are not; in fact, they’re very different. Medical insurance typically provides greater coverage after an incident has occurred. A broken arm, serious illness, or pregnancy will typically see insurers paying more for treatment.
Dental insurance, however, focuses on prevention. Encouraging patients to seek regular oral healthcare (i.e., six-month dental exams and cleanings, X-rays, fluoride treatment, etc.) reduces the potential need for restorative treatment. These services are often covered at 50-80% depending on the type of care required (i.e., dental fillings, dental crowns, root canals, etc.).
In-Network vs. Out-of-Network
When reviewing your plan, you will notice two columns titled in-network and out-of-network. This can be confusing if you’re unsure what they mean. Glamorous Smile Dental Spa is pleased to not only be an insurance-friendly practice but also serve as an out-of-network provider for those who require high-quality oral healthcare but do not have insurance that we are “in-network” with.
In-Network
In-network means that we have partnered with various dental insurance companies to establish a set fee for certain services. This ensures you pay as little as possible when visiting our office. We are pleased to be in-network with all PPO dental insurance plans, including:

- Delta Dental
- United Healthcare
- Cigna
Out-of-Network
Just because we are not in a contractual agreement with your dental insurance plan doesn’t mean you cannot receive the same high-quality care. If we are out-of-network with your plan, we will still file the necessary paperwork so that you can receive the greatest reimbursement after treatment is complete.
